What a debut! Fabio Scherer got the maximum out of the WEC (World Endurance Championship) season opener in Spa-Francorchamps with a victory in the LMP2 class. The Lucerne native and his two teammates Filipe Albuquerque and Phil Hanson dominated the race on the 7.004 km circuit in the Ardennes, giving United Autosports the perfect start to their mission to defend the world championship title.

“It’s incredible,” says Scherer. “That was my first race in LMP2. And we did everything right. The enthusiasm about this victory is huge. It felt really good to top the times in free practice but I still couldn’t really believe how quick we were.”

Scherer took over the cockpit of the Oreca-LMP2 in the lead after two double stints from his teammates. And extended the lead afterwards.

“Honestely I was a bit nervous when I took over the car. After all, it was my first time. And I definitely didn’t want to make a mistake. My team-mates did a great job so far. It’s really fun to work with them. After a few laps, the nervousness went away and I found a good rhythm. I’m really proud of what we achieved this weekend,” says WEC rookie who is supported by STOBAG and ATS.

It was the fifth consecutive victory at Spa-Francorchamps for Fabio’s Team United Autosports. From 2018, 2019 and 2020, the British squad won the race in the ELMS. In 2020 and now 2021, they were successful in the World Endurance Championship.

Team co-owner Zak Brown said after the fantastic start to the season: “A dream start in defence of our title. We have a new line up with Fabio, who performed really well, a really impressive debut and he’s only going to get stronger, which will only help the team get stronger as the season goes on. It was a pretty dominant performance in every session so I couldn’t be happier.”

Team co-owner and principal Richard Dean was also full of praise: “Wow, what a weekend for the WEC team. Completely dominant in all sessions. Great start to the season and the defence of our championship. Fabio had a great first weekend with us, really impressive. And Phil and Filipe, what a team. Hugely proud of United Autosports this weekend.”

The race continues for Scherer and his team United Autosports from 11 to 13 June in Portimão (P).
