After the cancellation of Sebring, the new WEC season will now start for Fabio Scherer beginning of April in Portimão. Time to have a few thoughts…
The new season starts for you beginning of April with the 8-hour race in Portimão instead of Sebring. Are you looking forward to it?
Fabio Scherer: Of course I would have loved to race at Sebring. I’ve only heard good things about this race track. And I’ve never been to the USA. That’s why I would have loved to drive there. But Portimão is also a great race track. I know it from Formula 3 tests.
When will you be behind the wheel of United Autosports LMP2 car for the first time?
The first tests are scheduled end of January/beginning of February in Spain and Portugal respectively. Because of the Corona pandemic it is not yet clear if these tests will take place. For me they would be very important. I need mileage to familiarise myself with my new car, the Oreca 07, and my new team, United Autosports. The tests are also very important because in 2021 we will have Goodyear tyres and not like before Michelin tyres.
Did you already have a seat fitting?
Unfortunately no. Great Britain is still in a lockdown status. That makes it impossible for me to travel to the UK. But I hope that we can do that very soon. And that we are also going to test soon.
How should one imagine the exchange with the team during such a special time?
I have been given some “manuells” to study. And we still have a few things to do – like tailoring the racing suit. But at the moment it’s still pretty quiet.
Have you met your two teammates Filipe Albuquerque and Phil Hanson yet?
Not personally, but we had a face-time meeting. I have a very positive impression of both of them. Phil and I are the same age. And Filipe is a kind of a father figure for us. He has an enormous amount of experience. I can certainly learn a lot from him. I’m definitely looking forward to working with them.
What does your training plan look like for the moment? There is no lack of snow to do your favourite leisure activity…
Yes, my only worry is that the ski resorts in Switzerland will have to close at some point because of the Corona pandemic. I really hope they’ll stay open.
What else is on the programme apart from skiing?
Cross-country skiing and fitness training. I also have sessions on the simulator.
Is your training already different regarding the longer races you will be doing?
Yes, the focus is more on endurance. After all, I’ll be sitting in the car for much longer than I’m used to at the races, especially at Le Mans.
