Fabio Scherer has confirmed his excellent fifth place from the previous week. At the second DTM meeting in Zolder, Belgium, the Swiss driver, who is supported by STOBAG and ATS Banding Systems, delivered a top performance and again finished fifth in the first race. In the second race on Sunday, the starting position for the driver of WRT Team Audi Sport was even better. Starting the race in fourth place – among the title contenders – Fabio wanted to confirm the performance of the day before. But in the second lap another competitor crashed in the back of his car.

“Frijns already overtook me in front of the chicane when I received a massive blow from behind,” says Scherer. “I didn’t have a chance and was literally pushed into Frijns’ Audi. I’m sorry that I ruined his race and his championship chances. But it was clearly not my fault. After all, the guy who caused the accident behind me apologised immediately after the race.”

Scherer was able to leave the gravel and drove back to the pits. But the damage to the car was too intense to jump back in the car again. “It is a shame. P4 was my best qualifying. I was even on pole position until shortly before the end of the qualifying. And then something like this happens. It is very frustrating. I could have finished in the top 5 again today – maybe even on the podium.”

Despite the collision and a ruined race, Fabio tried to leave Zolder with a positive feeling. “I proved in the first race on Saturday that I can achieve a top result though my own efforts. Müller was close on my heels for 30 laps. But I didn’t make a mistake and finished 5th. A big thank you also to the team. My boys did a great job. I’m proud that we were able to gain so much at the end of the season.”

Scherer will race again on 7/8 November at the DTM finale at Hockenheim. “I want to prove what I can do there once again. I hope that we can preserve the form we had at Zolder until the race at the Hockenheimring.”
