Swiss racing driver Fabio Scherer believes his FIA Formula 3 Championship campaign has “turned a corner” after his most impressive performance of the season at…/Read
Time was on Fabio Scherer’s side this weekend as he posted his strongest sequence of results in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship at Oschersleben and added an impressive 37 points to his season’s tally so far.
The Swiss driver, who was recently unveiled as an ambassador for prestigious timepiece brand Eterna Watches, was consistently one of the fastest drivers on the compact 3.69km Oschersleben circuit and a positive qualifying session on Saturday morning gave Fabio a P5 start slot for Race 1 and P3 on the grid for Race 2.
When Saturday afternoon’s opening 22-lap encounter got underway on a track where overtaking is notoriously difficult, 18-year-old Fabio’s skill enabled him to improve by one place as he finished P4 out of a field of 27 cars.
And the former Swiss National Karting Champion went a place better in Race 2 as he drove a near-perfect race to secure a coveted place on the podium. Without enough pace to challenge the leading duo ahead of him, Fabio’s focus in Race 2 switched to defending his podium position from the train of cars that were hotly pursuing his Stobag, Eterna Watches and ATS Banding-supported car.
But a masterful and confident display of defensive driving allowed Fabio to keep four cars behind him for around half of the 22-lap race and his exemplary race craft was rewarded with his second podium finish of the 2017 season.
“When the cars are running so close at Oschersleben, you have to be really neat and tidy with your driving. The outright speed is not so important, the race is about not making any mistakes and positioning your car correctly and fairly so nobody can get past,” Fabio explained. “When your pace is not the best, like it was for us in the first two races, you have to look forward and drive the races smartly. That’s how I earned Saturday’s podium and it felt great to hold everyone behind me.”
Fabio improved on his grid position again during Sunday’s Race 3 as a determined first lap charge enabled him to leap from his P7 starting berth to a P5 finish at the chequered flag.
The Swiss driver’s strong and consistent results at Oschersleben, an event which marks the mid-way point in the seven-round ADAC F4 Championship season, put Fabio back in the hunt for this season’s championship honours as he increased his points total from 46 to 83 in one weekend and put a pair of disappointing non finishes at Lausitzring and Spielberg firmly behind him.
“I’m really happy with this weekend’s race and points, particularly after not finishing a couple of races recently,” he said. “I think I did more or less the maximum this weekend and that’s a great way to respond after a little bit of disappointment.
“I was determined to look forward and now we have jumped forward by being consistently fast and finishing in and around the podium places. I think everything is still possible with the championship because it’s so long and there are still nine individual races to come. I’m excited and determined to see what we can do.”
Fabio was particularly pleased to reward his sponsors by scoring the best sequence of results in his F4 career at Oschersleben. He added: “I’m proud that I can reward my supporters with these points. I’m very lucky to count on the support of Stobag, Eterna Watches and ATS Banding. Giving them something back and enabling them to share in my success is what drives me forward.”
Fabio will continue his ADAC F4 charge when the series resumes at Nürburgring on 4-6 August.
